Mattress Disposal — the California Rules

California’s Mattress Recycling Council runs the Bye Bye Mattress program, which requires that mattresses and box springs be recycled — not landfilled. We do not accept mattresses that are wet or heavily soiled with biohazardous material — those require specialized remediation before recycling can accept them. Box springs go through the same program. Crib mattresses are treated separately — California AB 1201 governs infant mattress disposal, and we follow those protocols.
