Items junk removal cannot take include hazardous materials, electronics, and appliances requiring special handling. These prohibited materials need licensed technicians or designated disposal facilities. Knowing what’s on the “no” list before your appointment saves time and helps you plan ahead.
Items Junk Removal Cannot Take: Hazardous Household Chemicals
Household hazardous waste (HHW) is the most common category of items we can’t accept. This includes pesticides, herbicides, pool chemicals, cleaning solvents, automotive fluids (motor oil, transmission fluid, antifreeze), and any other liquid chemicals in containers. These materials can leak during transport, pose health risks to our crew, and require licensed HHW facilities for proper disposal. San Diego County operates several free Household Hazardous Waste drop-off programs — we’re happy to point you to the nearest location when you call.
Paint, Stains, and Coatings

Paint is one of the most frequently asked-about items — and unfortunately, it falls outside what we can haul. Liquid latex and oil-based paints, stains, varnishes, and coatings are classified as hazardous waste in California. Dried or fully hardened latex paint in open cans may be accepted at certain drop-off locations, but wet paint is always off the table. San Diego County’s HHW program accepts paint free of charge. You can also check PaintCare drop-off locations, which are available at many hardware stores throughout San Diego.
Items Junk Removal Cannot Take: Propane and Compressed Gas Tanks
Propane tanks — whether full, empty, or somewhere in between — present a serious fire and explosion risk during transport and disposal. We do not accept propane cylinders of any size, from small camping canisters to full-size backyard grill tanks. Most hardware stores and propane retailers in San Diego offer exchange or disposal programs for propane tanks. For larger tanks, your propane supplier can typically handle the pickup and recycling directly.
Items Junk Removal Cannot Take: Asbestos-Containing Materials
Asbestos is found in older homes across San Diego, particularly in popcorn ceilings, floor tiles, pipe insulation, and roof shingles built before the 1980s. If you suspect materials in your home contain asbestos, do not disturb them and do not attempt to have them removed as part of a standard cleanout. Asbestos abatement requires licensed contractors and specific disposal at designated facilities. We’ll always ask if asbestos may be present before loading materials from an older home.
What We Can Help With
Even with these restrictions, we can take the vast majority of items in your home — furniture, appliances, electronics, construction debris, yard waste, clothing, and general clutter. And when you have items that fall into the hazardous category, we’re glad to point you to the right San Diego County resource. Our goal is to be helpful even when we can’t haul something ourselves.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can Got Junk SD take old paint cans during a junk removal job?
No, we cannot haul liquid paint, stains, or varnishes. These are classified as hazardous waste in California. You can dispose of paint for free at San Diego County’s Household Hazardous Waste program locations or at PaintCare drop-off sites available at local hardware stores.
Can junk removal companies take propane tanks in San Diego?
No. Propane tanks of any size are not accepted by junk removal companies due to fire and explosion risks during transport. Most hardware stores and propane suppliers offer tank exchange or disposal programs. Contact your local propane retailer for options.
What should I do with asbestos materials in my San Diego home?
Do not disturb suspected asbestos materials. Asbestos removal and disposal must be handled by licensed abatement contractors, not standard junk removal companies. Contact a certified asbestos inspector or abatement contractor for testing and safe removal.
